Nikolaustag [St. Nicholas Day]

Have a nice St. Nicholas Day! In Austria, parts of Germany, and Switzerland, St. Nicholas brings his gifts -usually chocolate, nuts, dates and tangerines in a red bag- for good children on Nikolaustag - St.
Nicholas Day, Dec. 6, not Dec. 25, while the "Krampus" , St. Nicholas devilish helper, is said to punish the bad children by only giving them charcoal in their red bag. In our area male volunteers from the local church visit the children in the neigbourhood and give them their St. Nicholas bags. They are dressed up as St. Nicholas with a white beard, a miter and a bishop´s crozier and are accompanied by older kids dressed up as angels. I saw several of them on my way home :-) (At Christmas not the Santa Claus but the 'Christkind' , the Christ Child, which is the Austrian and Bavarian Christmas gift-bringer, "puts up the Christmas tree" and is giving presents on Dec . 24.) My MIL was so nice to give us our Nicholas-bags. Obviously we have been good kids this year. ;-)

  1. That sounds like a nice tradition. We've had our tree up since the day after Thanksgiving, which is pretty common in the US. Happy St. Nicolas day!

  2. Happy St. Nicholas Day! Whose Nicholas bag had a devil on it? ;) Love the polka dots in the previous post, too, and those fabric bird ornaments are too cute! :)
