Flohmarkt in Nizza [flea market in Nice]

Ein paar Impressionen vom Flohmarkt in Nizza, den ich sehr spannend fand, der aber ganz anders war als Flohmärkte hierzulande, eher ein outdoor-Antiquitätenladen als das Ergebnis vom Kellerausräumen, wie ich es von hiesigen Flohmärkten gewohnt bin. Perfekt für alle, die nach Silberbesteck, silberen Platten, antiken französischen Möbeln und Lustern oder französischen Kuriositäten Ausschau halten, aber es gab eigentlich keine jener Porzellanteile, die ich auf Flohmärkten immer suche und keine Pünktchenmuster. Die antiken Stühle sind entzückend, aber da die Menschen früher kleiner waren, ist die Sitzfläche auf halber Wadenhöhe und damit einfach zu niedrig. Ein Einkauf hätte auch wahrscheinlich das Urlaubsbudget gesprengt. ;-) Man konnte an vielen Ständen mit Kreditkarte (!) zahlen. (*klick* macht die Fotos jeweils groß)

A few impressions of the flea market in Nice. It was fascinating but quite different from the flea markets I know. The pieces there were more antique shop and less garage sale like in this country. If you are looking for antique french furniture, silver cuttlery silver plates, chandeliers or french curiosities it´s perfect for you, but there weren´t any of the porcelain pieces that I am usually looking for on flea markets and no polka dots from the 50ies. I liked those antique chairs but as people were smaller in former times the seatings were far below my knee. A buy would probably have blown our vacation budget anyways. ;-) They accepted credit cards(!) on most stands. (*click* on the pictures to enlarge)

Wer immer den alten Chemiebaukasten mit den halbeingetrockneten Chemikalien kauft- hoffentlich probiert er ihn nicht mehr aus.

Die kuriosestes Fundstücke sind sicherlich diese beiden antiken Vorratsdosen. Üblicherweise findet man auf Flohmärkten bloß Vorratsdosen für Zucker, Mehl und Ähnliches, aber nicht in Nizza! *haha*

Probably the strangest pieces I saw were these old storage tins. Usually you find antique storage tins or porcelain cans for flour, sugar and similar edibles on fleamarkets, but not in Nice! The ones above are for hashish and opium.

Stoffe gab es auch. Mit stolzen Preisen und in grellen Farben, aber ohnehin nicht aus reiner Baumwolle, also fürs Quilten damit uninteressant.

There were also fabrics. Quite loud colors and not pure cotton therefor not for quilting.

Sonntagsfreuden [Sunday´s joy]

Frau Kreativberg hatte eine zauberhafte Idee- sie sammelt Sonntagsfreuden. Ich möchte nun auch mitmachen. Meine heutige Sonntagsfreude: ein Überraschungsbesuch für Oma an ihrem Geburtstag.

Südfranzösische Stoffe und Zwirn [French fabric and thread]

Ich sah weder die Schuhe noch Taschen im Schaufenster, sondern überlegte, wieviele Quilts man mit diesen Spulen voll Zwirn nähen könnte. ;-)

I did not see the shoes or bags in this shop window but wondered how many quilts one could sew with all this thread. ;-)

Anstelle von Souvenirs kaufe ich unterwegs gerne kleine Mengen regionaler Stoffe, dann kann ich mich beim Quilten immer daran erinnern, wo die Stoffe herkamen. Die traditionellen Stoffe aus der Provence sind recht farbenfroh und haben meist Blumenmuster. Hauptsächlich gab es in den Geschäften lediglich fertiggenähte Tischsets und Tischdecken voller Olivenranken und ich gab schon fast die Hoffnung auf, einfache Stoffe zu finden...

Instead of souvenirs I like to buy little amounts of regional fabrics so I can remember where I got them when I use them in a quilt. The traditional fabrics of the Provence are quite colorful and have patterns with flowers. In most shops I could only find readymade placemats and tablecloths and started to feel a little discouraged already...

...dann fand ich doch noch zwei kleine Stoffgeschäfte in Cannes, wo es im letzten Winkel außer Möbelstoffen und Unmengen an Spitze sogar Baumwollstoffe gab.
...finally I found two little fabric shops in Cannes where they sold upholstery fabric, incredible amounts of lace and -in the last corners- some french cotton fabrics.

Das sind typische provenzialische Stoffe, ziemlich fest gewebt.

Außerdem nahm ich noch ein paar französische Blümchenstoffe mit, von denen ich annahm, dass sie sich gut mit anderen Stoffen aus meinem Fundus und weiß kombinieren lassen. So lassen sich auch traditionelle Blümchenstoffe für moderne Quilts verwenden (die Pünktchenstoffe im Hintergrund sind aus meinem Stoffvorrat).
Besides that I bought some french fabrics with florets. I think these can be combined with other "modern" fabrics and white fabric to make "modern" quilts with traditional floret fabrics (the gingham and polka dot fabrics in the background are basics from my stash).


Ich mag vor allem die blauen Blümchen links, die von Weitem wie Pünktchen aussehen.


I especially like the lightblue and darkblue flowers on the left that look like polka dots from a distance.

Wir verbrachten ein paar Tage in einem kleinen Selbstversorgerappartement an der Côte d’Azur. Damit es hier in der Zwischenzeit nicht so langweilig ist, war der Blog währenddessen quasi auf Autopilot geschaltet und hat ein paar vorbereitete Beiträge gepostet. Schön war´s! Jetzt sind wir aber wieder froh die lange Autofahrt hinter uns zu haben und dass auch zuhause der Sommer wiedergekehrt ist. 36°C! Juhuu! Wenn der Kühlschrank wieder gefüllt und der Schmutzwäscheberg abgetragen ist, zeige ich euch ein paar Bilder von örtlichen Stoffgeschäften, pittoresken Bergstädtchen, von Henri Moore gestaltete Kirchenfenster, französischen Kuriositäten und vom Flohmarkt in Nizza. Bis dahin gibt es ein paar Bilder aus Cannes.

We spent a couple of days in a cute little self catering appartement on the Côte d’Azur in France. (The blog was in while in some kind of autopilot-modus and postet prepared posts so it would not be so boring here.) We had a great time but now we are happy to be back home after a long car ride and happy that the summer came back to our country. 36°C! Great! When the fridge is refilled and the piles of dirty clothes and towels are washed, I will show you some pictures of local fabric stores, french curiosites, picturesque mountain villages and the flea market in Nice. Until then there are just a few pictures of Cannes.

Schnirkelschneckenquilt [snail trail quilt]

Bei diesem Quilttop konnte ich endlich viele meiner hellblauen Stoffe verwenden. Einige sind alte Hemden oder traditionelle Dirndlstoffe, andere Stoffe habe ich von Reisen mitgebracht, vom Stoffmarkt in Amsterdam und vom Marche St.Pierre in Paris. Nur der beige Stoff ist aus einem Quiltgeschäft.

When someone is looking at my stash it is not hard to see that I like lightblue fabrics. For this quilttop I could finally use a lot of the lightblue fabric from my stash. Some fabrics were old men´s shirts, other fabrics are traditional fabrics for traditional austrian costumes. I bought some of the fabrics last year on markets and shops in Amsterdam and Paris. Only the beige fabric is from a quilt shop.

Das ist ein ganz traditioneller Block, davon gibt es mehrere Fotos im Internet. Die einzelnen Blocks sind aus halbierten Quadraten und in Stücken geschnittenen Doppelstreifen schnell genäht. Ich musste bloß die Maße festlegen. Ich mag das ineinandergreifende Muster, den den wirbeligen Effekt und dass ich ganz unterschiedliche Stoffe verwenden konnte.

The snail trail block is a traditional block. You can find many pictures on the internet. I just had to figure out the measurements and do the quilt maths. I think it would work great with charm packs and jelly rolls. I like the whirling effect, the tesselating pattern and the scrappy look.

Ich wünschte, ich könnte diesen Quilt zu einem Longarmquiltingservice schicken, aber das gibt es hier wohl nicht. So wie ich den gequiltet haben möchte, geht das mit meiner einfachen Nähmaschine wahrscheinlich gar nicht. I wish I could send this quilt off to a Longarmquiltingservice but there is none around. The way I want it to be quilted seems almost undoable with my simple sewing machine.

Türkise Stofftaschen [Aqua tote bags]

Ich nähe gerne Stofftaschen. Für Einkäufe statt Plastiksackerl, Flohmarktbesuche, als Geschenk(verpackung)... Diese beiden habe ich vor einer Weile für meine Mutter und meine Schwester genäht.

I like to sew fabric tote bags. For grocery shopping instead of plastic bags, for fleamarket visits, as presents or wraps for presents. I sewed these some time ago for my Mom and my sister.

Flohmarktbeute [flea market finds]

Hier gibt es, schon seit ich mich zurückerinnere, einmal im Jahr mitten in der Innenstadt einen Flohmarkt, der freitags beginnt und am Samstag gegen Mittag endet. Die Straßen werden zum Teil gesperrt und private und professionelle Händler verkaufen ihre Schätze. Ich war schon als Kind mit meiner Mutter dort unterwegs. Meine Freundin A., wir kennen uns, seit wir 10 Jahre alt waren, teilt ebenfalls meine Flohmarktbegeisterung. Es ist also schon Tradition, dass sie und ich den Nachtflohmarkt mit Taschenlampen bewaffnet durchstreifen. Zum Glück haben A. und ich ein anderes Beuteschema, ich suche getupftes Porzellan aus den 50ern und 60ern und sie spezielle Teile von Lilienporzellan. Wir prämieren auf Flohmärkten immer das jämmerlichste Stofftier und zählen die angebotenen Fußbadewannen. Heuer gab es vier Fußbannewannen, wir zählten an anderen Flohmarkttagen aber auch schon 11 (ehrlich - wer kauft die bitte??)

Every year there is a fleamarket in the inner city, that starts on Friday and ends Saturday at noon. There are road barriers so people can sell their stuff on the streets. I have been there already as a child together with my Mum. My friend A. and I -we´ve known each other since 5th grade- shares the flea market enthusiams as well. It´s kind of a tradition that we are roaming this nightfleamarket armed with torch lights. Luckily we do have a different prey pattern, I am looking for polka dot porcelain from the 50ies or 60ies and she prefers "Lilienporzellan", which is pastel-colored porcelain from the 50ies. On fleamarkets we always secretly award a price for the most pathetic plush toy and count the offered footbath-tubs. This year there were four, on other fleamarkets we have counted up to 11 (honestly - who buys those??)

2 nette Küchenuhren. Ich widerstand tapfer dem Habenwollenimpuls, schließlich habe ich schon eine himmelblaue Küchenuhr und wieviele Küchenuhren braucht der Mensch? Eben.

2 nice kitchen clocks. I resisted to buy them since I already have one light blue kitchen clock and how many kitchen clocks does one need?
Mir gefiel auch das Service mit dem Spinnennetzmuster. Aber wenn ich mich nicht auf ein paar ausgewählte Dinge beschränke, kann ich mich zuhause nicht mehr bewegen, also blieb es dort.

I also liked the tea set with the spider web pattern. But if I don´t limit myself to a few certain things I can´t move inside my home anymore, so it stayed there.

A.fand eine neongelbe Lederschultasche, die sie als Aktentasche verwenden will und ein Tosteisen, mit dem man am Lagerfeuer oder am Almhüttenherd Toast machen kann (leider war es schon zu dunkel für Fotos).

A.found a leather briefcase in fluorescent yellow and an old unused toast iron from the 60ies in original packing, to make toast on open fire or on the old wooden stoves in alpin cabins (unfortunately it was too dark already for pictures).

3 Porzellanteller für zusammen € 1,--, passend zu meiner weißen Teekanne. Teekannen sind für mich das, was Schuhe für Carrie Bradshaw sind. Ich finde man kann einfach nicht genug Teekannen haben! Außerdem ist diese Teekanne sehr platzsparend unterzubringen.

3 porcellain plates, all together for € 1,-- that fit my white teapot. Teapots are for me what shoes are for Carrie Bradshaw. One cannot have too many teapots! Besides this teapot doesn´t take up much space.

A. kaufte diese hangeschnitzte Kuh um 20cents für mich. Ich finde sie großartig!

Brombeerquilt [Blackberry Quilt]

Anstelle des nun eigentlich vorgesehen Hochsommers erleben wir hier sowas wie einen goldenen Frühherbst. Ich mag das Licht, die reifen Früchte - aber noch lieber würden wir jetzt schwimmen gehen. Leider haben die Seen gerade mal 20°C also mache ich das Beste daraus und lasse mich von den Herbstfarben inspirieren.
Right now it should be midsummer, at least 30°C and hot. Instead we experience an early golden autumn. I like the light, the ripe fruits - but we would rather go swimming this time of the year instead. Too bad that the lakes are only 20°C at the moment so I try to find inspiration in the autumn colors.
